    Andre Kostelanetz who commissioned A Lincoln Portrait began a tradition of asking the narrators to autograph his score after each performance.
    The inscriptions read:

    To Andre Kostelanetz with profoundest thanks after a thrilling radio premiere and my first hearing.
    August 16, 1942 Aaron [Copland]

    For Andre, again, after twenty-five years with profoundest thanks. Aaron [Copland]

    Andre, we are now old troupers coast to coast. May the road to hell grow green waiting for you.
