Abstract
Artur Rodzinski (AR) correspondence with Orchestra Manager Arthur Judson (AJ) 1944-1946. AJ on possible Manhattan town house for AR (June 1944); date of proposed Pension Fund Concert with Toscanini (Aug 1944); criticism by the Board of Directors of expenditures for soloists and choral groups in excess of the amount previously approved, requiring prior board approval (Nov 1944); memo to AR that programs should not serve political functions with the assistance of diplomats or national groups (Nov 1944); AJ to AR (30 Nov 1944), "the unpleasant duty of telling you that you cannot do certain things falls on my shoulders", the governing power residing in the Board of Directors; AR request for appearance of Villa-Lobos as guest conductor (Dec 1944); AJ submission of list of possible soloists for the following season (Jan 1945); AR resistance to organists as soloists (Feb 1945); AR insistence that at least one week each season should be reserved for an American conductor (Feb 1945); AR forbidden to use his name as a sponsor of various organizations (Feb 1945); discussion of engagement of various artists as soloists for 1945-46 season; AJ conveys request from Board not to perform Strauss' "Ein Heldenleben" or Bruckner's 7th Symphony during war years; Complaint by Ar about loss of two broadcasts, and the effect on his finances (April 1945); Angry note by AJ about public complaints by AR and his wife that the orchestra managers were not around when needed, denied by AR (ALS 19 May 1945) who claims the sources are "the gossiping inner family" and that "evil forces are on the offensive right now" and "we all will fight them"; Request from AJ for a meeting to discuss the relationship between his office and the conductor (May 1945); question of what program content should be used for opening concerts following conclusion of World War II (Aug 1945); AR "loath" to honor birthdays of contemporary composers - where would it end?" (Oct 1945); AR on the impact of world events on him and the Philharmonic, calling for a special "V2 day" celebration (Sept 1945); ALS-Waldo E. Cohn, October 1945, on his outspoken efforts, as an "Atomic Bomb Scientist" and Director of the Oak Ridge Symphony, to speak to the public about desire of he and his colleagues to renounce further use of the atom bomb; acrimonious exchange between AJ and AR (May-June 1945); AR objection to one year contracts as Music Director (Dec 1945); Request from AR to terminate contract with AJ as his manager, with a litany of grievances (May 1937); hiring musicians from outside New York in conflict wih current union rules (April-May, 1946); Holiday greetings from AJ to Ar (December 1946)
