- Article by Philharmonic clarinetist Simeon Bellison about his instrument - Premiere of Lukas Foss's cantata "The Prairie" - Assistant conductor Leonard Bernstein returns to the podium to conduct four concerts, featuring pianist Jeanne Therrien - Composer-conductors Heitor Villa-Lobos and Igor Stravinsky conduct their own works - Artur and Halina Rodzinski have a son, Richard. Artur Rodzinski celebrates by distributing cigars to all musicians in the Philharmonic - World premiere of Paul Creston's Symphony No. 2, Op. 35 - World premiere of Virgil Thomson's Symphony on a Hymn Tune (revised 1944) - Ilsa Wirthschaft Walter, wife of Bruno Walter, passes away after long illness - Laura d'Oremieulx Roosevelt, director and former vice-president of the New York Philharmonic Society, passes away at the age of 87 - Robert Casadesus and Rodzinski join forces for a concert to benefit the Red Cross War Fund.
