- Stadium Concerts for the 41st and 42nd Seasons - Van Cliburn, who recently won the Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition, makes his Stadium debut on 4 Aug 1958 - Lotte Lenya, widow of the late Kurt Weill, performs in an all-Weill program on 1 Aug 1958 - Jan Peerce, Roberta Peters, Claramae Turner, and Carl Palangi perform Verdi vocal selections on 29 Jul 1958 - Union negotiations and wage dispute threatens cancellation of summer Stadium Concerts 42nd Season - Offenbach "Tales of Hoffmann" to be performed in concert form on 29 Jun 1959, featuring soprano Irene Jordan and baritone Martial Singher - Sanford Allen becomes first black musician to serve as a regular member of the Stadium Symphony - American Ballet Theatre performs at the Stadium - Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong scheduled to perform but had to cancel Stadium appearance due to pneumonia; makes a quick recovery and performs on his 59th birthday
