Abstract
- Gustav Mahler takes over music direction of the New York Philharmonic, increasing the length of the season from eight concerts to over thirty. - First Concert commences under Gustav Mahler's direction. - Mahler lowers price of admission, believes larger audiences and masses of people can be educated through music. - Mahler makes New York Philharmonic debut as director - Bella Alten performs as soloist with the Philharmonic Society - The Philharmonic gives a series of six historical concerts programming the most famous composers from the Baroque to the present day. - Mahler initiates a Beethoven cycle.
