Abstract
- Shostakovich declines an invitation to conduct the Philharmonic
- Harry Glantz and John Amans both resign from the orchestra
- Six new members join the orchestra to fill vacancies; New members include James Smith, John Wummer, William Jack Satterfield, Vincent J. Abato, Arthur Layfield, and Frank Gullino
- Toscanini opens season with Berlioz's Romeo and Juliet Overture, featuring Jennie Tourel, Jacques Gerard, Nicola Moscona, and the Westminster Choir
- Maurica Van Praag and Saul Goodman contribute two old timpani, along with a number of other metallic materials, to a scrap drive to benefit the war effort
