Abstract
- Shostakovich declines an invitation to conduct the Philharmonic - Harry Glantz and John Amans both resign from the orchestra - Six new members join the orchestra to fill vacancies; New members include James Smith, John Wummer, William Jack Satterfield, Vincent J. Abato, Arthur Layfield, and Frank Gullino - Toscanini opens season with Berlioz's Romeo and Juliet Overture, featuring Jennie Tourel, Jacques Gerard, Nicola Moscona, and the Westminster Choir - Maurica Van Praag and Saul Goodman contribute two old timpani, along with a number of other metallic materials, to a scrap drive to benefit the war effort - Mayor La Guardia organizes a Columbus Day concert in cooperation with the American Federation of Musicians and the Philharmonic-Society; Special address from Attorney General Francis Biddle - Bruno Walter conducts the world premiere of Carpenter's Symhony No. 2 with Nathan Milstein as soloist - Saul Goodman replaces the drums destroyed in the storm at Lewisohn Stadium over the summer with drums he made himself at his home workshop - New York premiere of Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony, conducted by Toscanini - Rudolph Ganz opens the twentieth season of Young People's Concerts with compositions by composers from the United Nations - Howard Barlow begins his two-week appearance as guest conductor, leads the US premiere of Miaskovsky's Symphony No. 21 and the world premiere of Deems Taylor's Marco Takes a Walk - Robert Casadesus receives some of the highest praise of the season as soloist on the Liszt A Major Concerto - Morton Gould's American Symphonette No. 2 is the standout feature on a program emphasizing American works - Concerts for the war effort include Red Cross Benefit Concert and concert at Mitchel Field Air Base - Rodzinski conducts Shostakovich's Seventh, the second time the work the work is played by the orchestra in under two months - 100th anniversary of first concert as well as the first anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor - Philharmonic asks Secretary of State to intervene on behalf of Spanish cellist Pablo Casals - John Corigliano appears as soloist with the newly-formed Queens Symphony Society - Centennial concert performed onboard the U.S.S.
