Abstract
- Boulez conducts premiere of his new work Rituals as part of his final season as Muic Director, the only work of his that he has conducted at NYP subscription concerts, and which is dedicated to the memory of Italian composer-conductor Bruno Maderna - Mayor Abraham Beame establishes the Mayor's Award of Honor in Arts and Cultre - Rodney Friend becomes the new concermaster of the NYP - Avery Fisher Prizes awarded to Richard Stolzman and Andre -Michel Schulb - Zubin Mehta conducts his first concerts with NYP to mixed reviews prior to becoming Music Director in 1978 - NYT Portrait of Erich Leinsdorf - NYP toured Europe with peformances made up of American composers, a first for American orchestras touring abroad, in honor of the Bicentennial - Portait of Roland Kohloff, NYP tympanist, who plays New York Premiere of Donatoni's Concertino for Strings, Brass, and Solo Timpani - Commisioner Eleanor Norton Holmes comments on lack of hiring of Black musicians on Broadway and comments on prior dealings with the New York Philharmonic on the same subject, which differed from the hiring practices for Broadway orchestras and therefore would not be subject to any solution which would be enforced - Article in NYT about culture in the Jimmy Carter White House. He loves classical music and the National Endowment for the Arts will be supported - New York Premiere of Del Tredici's Final Alice conducted byLeinsdorf with lyric soprano Barbara Hendricks - Portrait of Harold Gomberg, principal oboist, who is retiring after thirty-four seasons with NYP
