"This Adagio, in three sections, and for strings only, consists of a beautiful and rather ornate melody played in its last statement. I feel that I need make no apology for its inclusion here, for two reasons: (1) The Divertimento No. 11 lacks a slow movement proper; (2) This beautiful movement (first brought to my attention by Sir Thomas Beecham) is too seldom heard."
