Abstract
ALS-Theodore Thomas to E. H. Schermerhorn, President of the New York Philharmonic Society, announcing his resignation as Conductor of the Philharmonic, and the signing of a contract that very day for a new unspecified position. He came "to the conclusion that New York will not support a first class orchestra." Thomas returned to the Philharmonic in 1879 where he stayed until 1891 before accepting the position as Conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
