Notes
  • While in Munich in the summer of 1883, Theodore Thomas (then the music director of the New York Philharmonic) received the score to Richard Strauss's Symphony No. 2 in F Minor from the composer's father, Franz. Thomas brought the score back to New York and led the Philharmonic in the world premiere on December 13, 1884; this was the first performance of Strauss's music in the United States. When Thomas left New York in 1891 to found the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the score went with him.
