Wagner honors composer team Rodgers and Hammerstein on the Stadium Concerts' 12th annual "Rodgers and Hammerstein Night" - Labor negotiations reach a compromise - Sanford Allen becomes first black musician to serve as a regular member of the Stadium Symphony - Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong scheduled to perform but had to cancel Stadium appearance due to pneumonia; makes a quick recovery and performs on his 59th birthday - Selwart R. Clarke is hired as the first black hiring agent for a classical music organization, the Municipal Concerts Orchestra - Josef Krips conducts Beethoven's Triple Concerto, with John Corigliano on violin, Laszlo Varga on cello, and Leonard Bernstein on piano
