Wagner, Jr. proclaims "Philharmonic Week" and presents Leonard Bernstein with a gold key to the city - NYP under guest conductor Eleazor do Carvalho performs the last movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at the annual United Nations Day Concert - Leventritt Award winner Malcolm Frager plays Prokofiev and Mozart piano concertos with NYP - Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos dies at age 72 - Violist Samuel Lipschitz, who played with both the New York Symphony under Walter Damrosch and the Philharmonic, dies at age 69 - Mack Harrell, who sang the title role of Wozzeck with the Philharmonic, and father of cellist Lynn Harrell, dies at age 50 - Five Russian composers including Dmitri Shostakovich and Dmitri Kabalevsky visit the U.S, and attend concert of all-Russian works performed by NYP - Mahler Festival celebrating centennial of his birth includes the First, Second, Fourth, Ninth and Tenth Symphnies, Kindertotenlieder and Das Lied von der Erde counducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos, Bernstein, and Bruno Walter - In a New York Post column, Eleanor Roosevelt reviews a NYP concert she attended as a regular subscriber and hopes that the orchestra will remain at Carnegie Hall - NYP musicians seek year-round pact
