Because the 21 July performance Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was postponed due to rain, the Philharmonic planned to use 22 July as a make-up date. However, due to continuing rain problems, this program was unexpectedly performed in the Great Hall, and the Beethoven was postponed further. The Herald-Tribune says an "encore or two" were thrown into the program.
