Notes
Originally uploaded to YouTube with the title Camryn Cowan’s “Harlem Shake” and the following description:

Join our celebration of the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote, with a performance aired last week as part of The 19th News. We proudly present a newly recorded virtual performance by NY Phil musicians of “Harlem Shake” by Camryn Cowan, a piece we premiered in 2018, when Camryn was just 10 years old.

About the piece this participant in our Very Young Composers Program said: “I aimed to infuse sounds of early 1920s jazz with the contemporary Hot Jazz sound I heard in New Orleans. I drew inspiration from Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. You will hear a solo by the saxophone that will make you want to get up and shake!”
